![]() The final shot of Dawn of the Dead shows Peter and Francine (Gaylen Ross) escaping the overrun mall in the helicopter that brought them there in the first place. Romero Originally Planned For A Bleaker Ending So, every night it'd take the crew an hour and a half to two hours to take all the Christmas decorations down, get set up for shooting and then at the end of the night, when they were wrapped they'd have to put all the Christmas decorations up.Īfter a while, the production team got tired of wasting valuable shooting time and going through the process of removing and reassembling decorations every night, and so they decided to shut down production until after the holidays. In a 2005 interview with Ain't It Cool News, Greg Nicotero, who would go on to become a legend of his own with The Walking Dead and a number of other notable projects, explained the situation in frustrating detail: Romero and company, namely all the Christmas decorations that were hanging around the Monroeville Mall that was still very much in use. Production for Dawn of the Dead began in November 1977 which created a few problems for George A. The Dawn Of The Dead Crew Had To Take Down And Reassemble Christmas Decorations Every Night It's a fun, lighthearted scene that also makes you forget that some serious shit is about to go down in the film's final moments. I’m trying to see if I can get past all that violence and just hoot and holler and cheer and throw pies and shit.Īnd if you will recall, the final act of Dawn of the Dead features an impromptu pie fight involving the motorcycle gang and army of the undead. I want Dawn to play like a cowboy and Indians movie. It’s comic books, man, it’s paperbacks, you know, that’s what they are. I mean, I’d be willing to put the POW! BANG! SUPER! on it. In the Rolling Stone profile mentioned above, Romero admitted that while he was trying to create a morality play with his second Dead movie, he also wanted to have some fun at the same time, stating: Make no mistake about it, Dawn of the Dead is a terrifying and oftentimes grotesque horror movie, but there are elements of humor and downright campiness, albeit very intentional on the part of writer-director George A. Several water crossings gave us some difficulties and wet boots, but we eventually made it through.Despite The Horror, Romero Wanted Dawn Of The Dead To Play Like Cowboys And Indians With Pie Fights One section we took follows a power line cut through the woods and offers up some decent challenges, including rocky ascents and descents. The TCAT offers some alternate technical sections that roughly parallel the main track. ![]() The isolation was a rarity for us, and the peace of shutting our bikes off in the middle of the trail and hearing nothing but the gentle breeze through the trees never got old. ![]() A stop near a river gave us a chance to enjoy the natural beauty and sounds of a seemingly endless supply of rushing water. We didn’t see any cars though – or anyone else. If two cars were to meet here, they would have to negotiate a path to allow each other to get by. The road turned into a single lane with trees on each side. Once back on the TCAT north of Sudbury, we were totally alone. We crossed many bridges on the Trans Canada Adventure Trail, but we deemed this one too risky. I had the most dirt-riding experience, and with my new-to-me, BBQ-black enamel painted Kawasaki KLR650 – easily the ugliest bike on the trip – I was probably the least concerned with dropping my bike. Greg’s KTM 790 Adventure was probably the most off-road capable bike on this trip, but with almost zero dirt-riding experience, he didn’t know how he would handle the rigors of the trail. Dan, who had some dirt-riding experience, was concerned with how his Yamaha Super Ténéré would handle some of the tighter, more technical parts of the trail. Our group was a fairly diverse threesome of riders. Our plan was to ride about 900 miles of the TCAT, which stretches 9,000 mostly off-road miles from Newfoundland in the east to British Columbia in the west (see sidebar “TCAT 101” at end of the story). (Photos by the author)Īfter months of planning and a morning of pavement riding, we arrived at a section of the Trans Canada Adventure Trail near Huntsville, Ontario. ![]() Snowmobile trails become motorcycle trails during the summer. ![]()
